Drame à la Sonacos de Ziguinchor : La société civile interpelle la direction de l’usine
JA Sagna, a young employee of Sonacos/Ziguinchor and recently recruited as a pre-production technician, had his left leg amputated and lost three fingers on his left hand following a workplace accident on the night of Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the National Oilseed Marketing Company of Senegal (Sonacos). The accident was caused by a break in a pre-production line. This tragedy has brought renewed attention to the perceived dangerous working conditions of Sonacos/Ziguinchor employees.
"When we speak out, it is neither out of bitterness nor jealousy, but for the well-being and safety of our fellow citizens. Unfortunately, our warnings are too often ignored, until the irreparable happens. Today, a father has lost the use of his leg and his fingers, and his life has just been shattered," reads a statement from civil society organizations in Ziguinchor widely circulated on social media.
Not stopping there, they directly challenged the management of Sonacos on its responsibilities and on the working conditions within the factory and invited it to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
"We hope that the management of Sonacos, in particular its director, will take full responsibility, both on a human and administrative level, so that such tragedies do not happen again," concludes the note signed by FRAPP, ON2J and Vision citoyenne.
