Heavy rains in Matam this week have caused several inconveniences for the population : submerged houses, damaged roofs, and sections of boundary walls and buildings destroyed. Adding insult to injury, two deaths have been reported in the Soubalo neighborhood of Matam, where a collapsed wall claimed the lives of two young children.
This tragedy occurred on Wednesday, August 13, around 5 p.m. The two children, aged 6 and 1, were standing next to the front of their home's mud-brick building. "They were killed when the veranda wall collapsed, where other children were learning the Quran," said a family member. "The collapse of the structure also injured others, who are being treated at the Matam Regional Hospital," continued our interviewee, who was traumatized by the accident.
Following the incident, the mayor of Matam ordered the building's demolition. To prevent further disasters, a commission, led by administrative and territorial authorities and in conjunction with civil protection services, is working to identify vulnerable buildings.
