In Senegal, the level of business creation declined sharply during the first three months of the year. Indeed, the National Register of Businesses and Associations (RNEA) recorded 24,449 new registrations.

This represents a decrease of 8.4% compared to the previous quarter, during which 26,685 registrations were made. Even worse, compared to the first quarter of 2025, a decrease of 13.9% has been observed, according to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) on Thursday.

New registrations are dominated by sole proprietorships, which account for 73.0% of total registrations. They are followed by Economic Interest Groups (EIGs), with a share of 7.2%.

For their part, Limited Liability Companies (SARL) and Single-Member Limited Liability Companies (SUARL) recorded respective proportions of 2.9% and 2.7% among new registrations.

The sectoral analysis of new business creations highlights a strong predominance of trade, which accounts for 27.9% of registrations of legal entities and 69.1% of individual businesses.

Outside of this sector, individual businesses are mainly distributed between business services (6.5%), personal and miscellaneous services (5.4%), agriculture, livestock and fishing (5.1%), transport and telecommunications (4.1%), and building and public works (3.2%).

The food (0.9%) and textile (1.4%) industries remain marginal in the structure of new registrations.

Regarding the geographical distribution of new registrations, the Dakar region accounts for 50.8% of new registrations. It is followed by Thiès (12.5%), Diourbel (6.4%) and Kaolack (5.6%).

The lowest shares are observed in the regions of Kaffrine (1.3%), Sédhiou (1.3%), Matam (1.2%) and Kédougou (1.1%).

The data from the first quarter also reveal that men, with 68.1% of new registrations, are much more likely to create formal businesses than women, who are at 31.9%.

Individual entrepreneurs aged 35 to 54 appear to be the most represented, with 42.1% of registrations.
