Éducation : le G7 lance l’opération “Octobre Rouge” pour défendre les enseignants

Faced with a series of broken promises and a persistent deterioration in working conditions in the education sector, the G7 union collective is taking a stand. In a sharp statement published this Monday, the seven most representative union organizations of Senegal's teaching profession announced the launch of a vast mobilization campaign called "Red October," scheduled to begin on October 9, 2025.

Clear demands, simmering anger

The G7 denounces the non-compliance with social agreements signed with the State, particularly with regard to:

• Retirement pension reform,

• The digitalization of administrative procedures,

• Improving the salary and statutory treatment of teachers.

Despite the commitments made by the authorities, the unions note a worrying inertia. “The government seems deaf to our calls, while Senegalese schools are collapsing under the weight of injustices and institutional contempt,” the press release reads.

Red October: A Campaign of Resistance

The “Red October” campaign will be structured around several strong actions:

• Wearing red outfits in schools,

• The organization of general assemblies in schools and high schools,

• Peaceful marches to raise public awareness.

This movement aims to remind people that teaching is a noble profession, which deserves respect, recognition and adequate resources to fulfill its mission.

A call for unity and dignity

Beyond material demands, the G7 insists on the need to revalue the teaching profession, which is often relegated to the background in public policies. “We are not asking for privileges, but for respect for our dignity and our fundamental role in building the nation,” the group asserts.

The press release ends with a call for solidarity between all stakeholders in the education system, inviting teachers to mobilize en masse to make their voices heard.

“Red October” promises to be a turning point in the union struggle for education in Senegal. The G7, true to its mission, intends to make this month a symbol of resistance and renewal for public education.
