Access to sanitation services has ecosystem benefits. It is also a factor in preserving human dignity. This dimension was central to the speech of Ms. Fatouma Touré Ibrahima, the World Bank's Water Sector Director for West Africa.
She was participating in the inauguration of the sanitation facilities built by ONAS as part of the Water and Sanitation in Urban Areas Project (PEAMIR), financed by the World Bank. "Each sanitation facility put into service is a strong act in favor of human dignity, public health and local development.
Sanitation is often invisible, but its impacts are immense: it protects families, reduces disease, preserves the environment, and supports economic activity. The infrastructure we are inaugurating today embodies this ambition,” said Ms. Fatouma Touré Ibrahima, who added: “The objective of PEAMIR is clear: to increase access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services in selected rural and urban areas, while strengthening water resource management.”
With a budget of $130 million, or over 70 billion CFA francs, the PEAMIR has impacted more than one million people. "It is part of a continued strong partnership between Senegal and the World Bank, which has mobilized nearly $610 million since 1996 to support the development of the sector," she said.
