Lutte contre l’insécurité alimentaire : Dr Maïmouna Dièye lance à Podor le programme de soutien aux populations vulnérables
The Podor department hosted the official launch of the Food Insecurity Response Program, initiated by the Ministry of Women, Family, and Solidarity, on Wednesday, October 22. The ceremony, chaired by Dr. Maïmouna Dièye, Minister in charge of the department, marks the start of a nationwide operation aimed at supporting households affected by the recent floods and the rising of the Senegal River.
This program, with a fund of 1.3 billion CFA francs, primarily targets the departments of Kanel, Matam, Podor, and Bakel, among the hardest-hit areas. It is part of the social resilience and food security policy implemented by the government, under the leadership of President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Cash transfers to strengthen resilience
During her speech, Maïmouna Dièye announced the launch of cash transfer payments, intended for 1,959 vulnerable households identified through the Single National Register (SNR).
Each family will receive 135,000 CFA francs, for a total amount of 1,479,465,000 CFA francs, to enable them to meet their basic needs during this lean period.
In Podor, 2,700 households were targeted for a total financial support of 364,500,000 CFA francs, along with the distribution of eighteen tonnes of food kits.
This aid, the minister stressed, "reflects the government's desire to strengthen the resilience of local populations in the face of climatic hazards and recurring food crises."
The program is implemented by the National Solidarity Fund, with support from the Adaptive Social Protection Support Project, financed by the World Bank. According to the minister, it is an integrated response to food and nutrition crises, combining shelter, food, medical care, and temporary rehousing.
Dr. Maimouna Dièye also emphasized the principles of fairness, transparency, and efficiency that guide the system. "The payment system in place ensures that every franc paid reaches the beneficiaries directly, without intermediaries, thanks to modern mobile transfer technologies," she said.
In addition to cash transfers, an additional rice donation will be provided to affected families, in partnership with the Food Security and Resilience Commission (CSAR). This initiative is in addition to support from the National Solidarity Fund and the International Charity Organization, key partners in the national response plan.
The Minister expressed her gratitude to all those involved: local authorities, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, and community leaders. She also paid tribute to the beneficiaries, "whose dignity and resilience inspire solidarity actions every day."
The Food Security Program (PSA) is part of the Senegal 2050 vision, a strategic axis of the systemic transformation desired by the authorities.
"This program is a gateway to a fairer and more united future, where every Senegalese can live with dignity, regardless of where they live," the minister said.
The distribution caravan, led by the minister since October 20, will travel through all the targeted departments before ending in Salémata, in the Kédougou region, on October 26.
