Gamou de Thiénéba : Le ministre de l'Intérieur invite à un changement de comportement routier
The Minister of the Interior and Public Security, General Jean-Baptiste Tine, during a preparatory meeting dedicated to the 2025 edition of the annual Gamou of Thiénéba, held in Dakar, urged road users to be more careful, to adopt a "change of behavior" in traffic, in order to reduce the risk of accidents, often caused by Jakarta motorcycles.
"Accidents are too frequent. We must adopt responsible driving," said General Tine, who regretted that some people attend religious events only to lose their lives. The minister emphasized his department's deep concern about the increasing number of traffic accidents, particularly during large religious gatherings.
"Jakarta motorcycles are often involved in these tragedies," lamented Lieutenant Colonel Arona Sarr, commander of the Thiès and Diourbel gendarmerie legion. He called on religious leaders to raise awareness among the faithful about respecting the Highway Code and safety regulations. He also announced that the gendarmerie will now enforce a "zero tolerance" policy, requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets. This measure is not a constraint, but a safety precaution.
Senior Police Commissioner Balla Fall, deputy director of public security, reported that police had recorded six fatal accidents in Touba, most of which were due to "irresponsible behavior."
The country's top police officer has instructed the National Road Safety Agency to introduce financial penalties to deter users from taking "unconsidered risks."
