Grande Mosquée de Tivaouane : A l’origine…

It was in 1904 that the Great Mosque of Tivaouane was built by the man of God of exceptional dimensions, the great scholar of the Tijaniyya brotherhood of Senegal, Cheikhal Seydi El Hadji Maodo Malick Sy. After several renovations in the 1940s and 1950s, the Tijani community decided, in 1979, to extend the building to accommodate more worshippers. The work began but was stopped some time later.

After decades of stalling, construction work has been relaunched with renewed vigor. It is being financed by the faithful themselves through a major fundraising campaign initiated by the general caliph of the Tijani, Serigne Mbaye Sy Mansour, with the aim of making the city of Maodo an attractive city from a religious and infrastructure perspective.

Originally, it was by a decree of the Governor of Senegal, dated February 17, 1903, that Maodo received authorization to build the Great Mosque of Tivaouane, often modified, with the allocation of a plot of 1,200 m2. Over the years, this place of worship bore the foundations of its first Zawiya, hosting the night vigils of the Gamou or Mawlid Al Naby, celebrating the birth of the Prophet Mohammed (PSL).

After the disappearance of the Holy Man of Tivaouane (1852-1922), his heirs, under the authority of Sheikhal Seydi Khalifa Babacar Sy (1885-1957), decided to perpetuate his work by undertaking a first renovation in 1940. It was in 1979, under the magisterium of Khalif El Hadji Abdoul Aziz Sy "Dabakh Malock" that this House of God underwent its extension and took its current form.

The work on the Great Mosque of Tivaouane, restarted in September 2020, at the initiative of the General Caliph of Tidianes Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour, who, in 2019, decided to completely finish the building, requesting the contribution of all Muslims to this important project whose estimated budget is around fifteen billion FCFA, will certainly make it possible to highlight one of the oldest places of worship which has today become a symbol of the Tarikha Tidiane in Senegal.

After the launch, in December 1996, a first fundraising campaign was initiated to take into account the completion of the minarets, the resumption of the construction site, etc.

"There is enough money today to build this mosque. The committee in charge of the matter is working hard to continue the mission. We hope to soon have a mosque with a new look," said the president of the united framework of Islam in Senegal, Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Amine.

It was during the 2019 annual Gamou that Khalifa Serigne Babacar Sy Mansour expressed the wish to finally see the completion of the renovation work on this architectural masterpiece that has spanned eras and generations.
