Covid-19 : La recrudescence des cas s’intensifie avec l’émergence de nouveaux variants

Temperatures are beginning to drop, but Covid-19 cases are on the rise again in several regions of the world, notably in the United Kingdom and Europe, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The new XFG (Stratus) and NB.1.8.1 (Nimbus) subvariants are now the most commonly detected in the United Kingdom, British health authorities report. These lineages, both from the Omicron family, are distinguished by their high transmissibility, but do not appear to cause more severe forms than the previous ones, experts reassure.

Familiar symptoms but increased contagiousness

It should be noted that infections associated with these variants result in symptoms similar to those seen in previous episodes: cough, headache, runny nose, and fatigue. However, several patients also report a hoarse voice or a sore throat "like a razor blade," British health authorities specify.

Infections are increasing especially among young children and the elderly, two groups particularly vulnerable to seasonal respiratory infections. Hospital admissions related to Covid-19 are also increasing. Health services now advise anyone with symptoms to stay home, avoid contact with at-risk populations, and wear a mask when necessary.

A global trend confirmed

The phenomenon is not unique to Europe. The WHO reports an average increase of more than 10% in cases in several regions of the world, particularly in Europe and the Americas, where the respiratory illness season is in full swing. These areas are seeing increased co-circulation of the respiratory viruses Covid-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), complicating diagnoses and increasing pressure on health systems.

Enhanced surveillance and seasonal prevention

Experts stress the need to maintain genomic surveillance to track the evolution of new sub-variants and detect potential worrying mutations.

Booster vaccination remains recommended, particularly for those over 60, immunocompromised people and healthcare professionals, in order to limit severe forms and hospitalizations.

European authorities are also calling for the reactivation of barrier measures: ventilation of enclosed spaces, wearing of masks in case of symptoms, rapid tests to contain the spread of the virus in the coming months.
