Hommage à Georges Déthié Diop : les Évêques du Sénégal saluent un « journaliste accompli »
There is deep sorrow within the Ecclesiastical Province of Dakar following the sudden passing of Georges Déthié Diop on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. According to information relayed by the Union of Senegalese Clergy (UCS), the Bishops of Senegal expressed their "profound emotion" at the loss of the man they described as an "accomplished journalist." Buried on Saturday, February 14, in his native village of Ndiaganiao, the deceased leaves behind the memory of an upright professional whose respected voice was silenced while he was still working.
In an official message of condolence, Church dignitaries emphasized that this was a "sudden loss that deeply saddens us and leaves us in grief." Georges Déthié Diop had dedicated two decades of his professional life to Radio Futurs Médias (RFM). According to the Bishops, he had "established himself, over the years, as a respected voice in the Senegalese media landscape, through the strength of his integrity, his rigor, and his professional ethics, which left a lasting impression on all who knew him."
An unwavering commitment to the mission of the Church
Beyond his technical skills, the deceased played a leading role in the Christian community as former president of the Association of Catholic Communicators. He had passionately championed "the mission of creating spaces where the Christian faith could be expressed in the media." Through his Sunday program "Ecclesial" on RFM radio, he enabled "thousands of listeners, Catholic and of other faiths, to nourish their spiritual reflection each Sunday."
The Catholic Church also praised his role as a champion of social peace. According to the Bishops, "Georges embodied dialogue and mutual respect, through his presence at major Muslim religious gatherings, demonstrating his ability to build bridges between communities." In doing so, they added, "he honored Senegal with a legacy of peaceful coexistence."
The Bishops offered their "deepest condolences" to his wife, Emma Lucie Ndiaye, whom he had married less than a year before his death, praying "that she may find in faith the strength to get through this ordeal." Their thoughts are also with his parents, his colleagues at the Futurs Médias Group, and the entire Senegalese press.
The message from the Ecclesiastical Province concludes with a symbolic prayer, invoking the intercession of Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes, whose feast day is celebrated on the very day of his passing. The Bishops conclude by asking that "the Lord may graciously welcome this faithful servant" and lead him to eternal peace.
