A worker on the Iba Mar Diop stadium reconstruction site was arrested on May 7, 2026 by the Research Brigade of the Medina District Police Station, caught red-handed stealing electrical cables on this strategic site linked to the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

Repeated thefts on a construction site under high surveillance

It all began on March 23, 2026, when the company responsible for securing the construction site alerted the Medina police station. Several electrical cables had been stolen from the site under reconstruction, causing a total estimated loss of 23 million FCFA. Initial investigations quickly pointed suspicion toward certain workers on site.

Given the seriousness of the situation and the importance of the construction site for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the police decided to intensify surveillance, patrol and vigilance operations around the site.

Caught red-handed

The vigilance of the security guards finally paid off. On the evening of May 7, 2026, around 9:30 p.m., the head of security reported an individual trespassing on the construction site. The Criminal Investigation Unit, immediately dispatched to the scene, apprehended the suspect.

The man, identified as a construction worker residing in the HLM 5 housing complex, was searched on site. In his backpack, officers discovered ten electrical cables worth 300,000 FCFA. Confronted with the evidence, he immediately admitted to stealing the equipment.

Placed in police custody on May 8, 2026, at the Medina police station, the suspect is now facing charges of armed robbery. The investigators are not stopping there: his accomplices, who fled, are actively being sought by the police.
