A truly surreal scene unfolded at the central police station in Ziguinchor. A suspect arrested for a violent knife attack stunned the police officers by demanding, immediately upon being taken into custody, to smoke Indian hemp.
According to L'Observateur, the incident occurred last Wednesday. Mr. Diop, 41, was arrested after stabbing A. Guissé, a 35-year-old shoemaker, in the immediate vicinity of the police station. The swift response of law enforcement allowed for his almost immediate arrest at the scene, while the victim, seriously injured, was taken to the hospital where his condition was stabilized.
The suspect's unusual request was not taken lightly by the judicial authorities. It has now steered the investigation towards two hypotheses: either an analysis of the suspect's psychological state to determine his lucidity at the time of the events, or the existence of a severe addiction.
