Fête de l’Indépendance : Saint-Louis veut marquer les esprits avec un défilé d’exception

The Saint-Louis region is already gearing up to celebrate the 66th anniversary of Senegal's independence in grand style. This Tuesday, February 24, 2026, administrative and security authorities met at the governor's office for a Regional Development Committee (CRD) meeting dedicated to preparing for the event.

Chaired by Governor Al Hassane Sall, the meeting brought together Colonel Alioune Samassa, commander of Military Zone No. 2, as well as the heads of the various defense and security forces units. The objective was clear: to define the format of the festivities and coordinate actions to offer the population a celebration worthy of the event.

Following the discussions, the governor commended the quality of the contributions and the commitment of the participants. He stated that this consultation process allowed for the integration of national authority guidelines while adapting the organization to local realities, particularly for the municipality of Saint-Louis.

On April 4th, the city will resonate with the rhythm of a large-scale parade. The defense and security forces will be honored with a parade on foot and in vehicles, which is being touted as "memorable." Authorities hope to reaffirm the country's sovereignty and celebrate national unity through a demonstration of discipline, cohesion, and professionalism.

Beyond the traditional military and paramilitary parade, schools, youth movements, and cultural organizations will also be involved. Several civil-military activities are planned before and during the official ceremony to fully engage the local population.

This 66th edition will also emphasize the sporting, cultural, and tourism aspects. Regional authorities aim to showcase the rich heritage of the old town by offering events that will allow both residents and visitors to rediscover the city's cultural assets.

“This year, we want to take advantage of the river to organize a parade or a river cruise with the units of the defense and security forces, but also with fishermen and tourism operators with boats. The objective is to show another facet of the cultural richness of Saint-Louis,” the governor assured.

Defense and security forces units could march alongside fishermen and tourism operators with boats. This initiative aims to highlight another facet of Saint-Louis' identity and to place the Independence Day celebration within a dynamic that is both patriotic and heritage-focused.
