Emigration irrégulière à Popenguine: 123 candidats interceptés par la gendarmerie
As part of the fight against irregular migration, the Popenguine Territorial Brigade of the Mbour gendarmerie company intercepted a pirogue carrying one hundred and twenty-three candidates for clandestine migration on Monday, December 23, 2025 at 1 p.m., Seneweb learned from Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye.
The operation follows intelligence gathered by the National Navy's Operational Centre indicating the presence of a pirogue filled with candidates for irregular emigration who were preparing to land on the beach of Guéreo or that of Popenguine.
A surveillance and interception system was immediately put in place at the targeted sites, allowing the passengers to be apprehended.
The 123 candidates intercepted are made up of 101 men, 20 women and two children of different nationalities. Among them are 27 Senegalese, including 26 men and one woman, 19 Gambians, including 16 men and three women, 37 Malians, including 35 men and two women, 38 Guineans from Conakry, including 22 men and 14 women, as well as two Ivorians, all male.
The equipment seized during this operation includes a damaged 25-meter-long canoe, two outboard motors of 60 and 40 horsepower, 149 jerrycans of gasoline representing a total of 3,270 liters of fuel, and a generator.
According to initial information gathered from the candidates, the pirogue reportedly left Bara in the Republic of Gambia on Saturday, December 21, 2025, around 10 p.m.
The investigation continues to identify the organizers of this clandestine crossing. The National Gendarmerie reminds the public that its call center can be reached free of charge at the toll-free numbers 123 or 800 00 20 20 for any useful information.
