JDE 2025 : Le Président de l’ADES porte la voix de l’Afrique et appelle à la réforme de l’ONU

The international plenary session of the Summer Days of Ecologists (JDE) of Europe Écologie les Verts (EELV) was held in Strasbourg, France, from August 21 to 23, 2025. This year's theme was: "In a changing world: what place for multilateralism and international law?" And this year, the voice of Africa resonated well.

Indeed, in front of an audience of experts including the vice-president of the Grunen (the German Greens) and the MEP Mounir Satouri, the President of the Alliance of Ecologists of Senegal, Baye Salla Mar thrilled the audience with a speech on the importance of reforming the UN to better address issues related to peace, security, the fight against inequalities, among others.

According to the Senegalese Green Party's chief representative, human societies always have the ability to recover after major shocks. And that today's world is more and more out of step with the past momentum that inspired international law and multilateralism. "The United Nations is finding it increasingly difficult to prevent conflicts, end them, or even serve as a mediator," lamented Baye Salla Mar.

In the panel, which was crowded, the speakers all agreed on the need to rethink the world through equitable income distribution and environmental protection for sustainable life on Earth. The ecological issue, as a cross-cutting theme in multilateralism and international law, was raised by the Greens, who advocate for global justice and peace in harmony between man and nature. The Senegalese ecologist also questioned our common humanity in light of the complexity of the situation, the ravages of terrorism, migration issues, etc.

Social justice that takes racial, ethnic, and gender issues into account was also addressed by the panelists, who denounced the lethargy of our governments in not taking them into account in the development of their public policies, especially in Africa and certain Arab countries. For three days, the Greens defended the need to be well represented in municipal and state spheres to better understand the discourse that something is being rearticulated and that new forms of socialization are emerging.

And to conclude, Baye Salla Mar was keen to point out that "the fragility of international law lies in its confrontation with power relations and global crises which require unprecedented coordination."

He continues: "While some progress has been made, the international community must do more to: Strengthen the implementation of common standards; Introduce enforcement mechanisms and encourage more effective multilateral cooperation; Take into account climate change with its irreversible extreme events as a parameter of multilateralism and geopolitics; Rely on an ecological vision of multilateralism, which is a vision of peace because it combats pressure and predation on natural resources while promoting harmony."

And not only that: Mr. Mar proposes to "adapt multilateralism to the issues and challenges of our time. For example, terrorism is taking hold in the Sahel, illegal immigration, CC, desertification. It is at this price that international law could fully play its role in an increasingly interconnected and turbulent world; Make environmental diplomacy a major axis of negotiation, to strengthen international dialogue; African countries benefit from geographical diversity, with a multitude of ecosystems, deserts, tropical forests, - analyze the geostrategic positioning of the continent and have a coordinated mandate to carry a common message."
