The construction site of the Iba-Mar-Diop stadium, currently being renovated for the Youth Olympic Games, has recently been plagued by a series of electrical cable thefts. According to L'Observateur, which broke the story, the estimated value of the stolen cables is 23 million CFA francs. One of the suspected perpetrators was arrested on the evening of May 7th. He is Al Hadji K., a foreign national residing in the HLM 5 housing complex.
According to the newspaper Groupe Futurs Médias, he was caught red-handed stealing cables by the construction site security guard. "The suspect had taken care to pack the equipment in a bag prepared in advance to facilitate the transport of his loot," the newspaper reports.
Arrested and taken to the Medina police station, the suspect was searched. His bag contained about ten cables worth 300,000 CFA francs. Placed in police custody, he is expected to be brought before the prosecutor on Monday.
"The investigation continues in order to find the possible accomplices of the suspect, who are currently being actively sought by the services of the Medina district police station," concludes L'Observateur.
