Justice: 220 militaires et paramilitaires prêtent serment devant le Tribunal de Dakar

A swearing-in ceremony was held on Friday, January 30, 2026, in front of the High Court of Dakar. A total of 220 military and paramilitary personnel took the oath as assessors, defense attorneys, court clerks, and assistant court clerks, according to Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye, head of the Communication and Public Relations Division of the National Gendarmerie.

In accordance with applicable legal provisions, these personnel must take an oath before assuming their duties and at the opening of the first hearing, in the form prescribed by law. This oath was administered before this ordinary court with a special panel of judges.

Course of the ceremony

The President of the Military Tribunal opened the ceremony by recalling the purpose of the meeting, before giving the floor to the Public Prosecutor.

In his address, the Public Prosecutor emphasized the importance and solemn significance of the oath-taking ceremony. He reassured the presiding judge of the commitment of the future military and paramilitary assessors and defense attorneys, whom he described as driven by a sense of honor, duty, and responsibility.

The representative of the Bar Association then took the floor to recall the fundamental role of this jurisdiction in the administration of military justice, while insisting on the imperative of respecting the rights of the defense, Seneweb learned from Colonel Ibrahima Ndiaye.

Taking the floor again, the presiding judge reiterated the crucial role of the assessors and jurors, who must act exclusively in accordance with the law and with complete independence. He specified that their votes are deliberative and that they are bound by professional secrecy, in accordance with the provisions of Article 63 of the Senegalese Penal Code.

Following the various interventions, the court proceeded to call the different bodies, in order of precedence, for the reception of the oath of the personnel concerned.

The head of the Military Justice Division took this opportunity to review military judicial activities for the year 2025. He also invited assessors and defense lawyers to play a relay role in raising awareness among personnel about military justice.
