Kaffrine : La pénurie de gaz butane complique la préparation du "ndogou"
Since the beginning of Ramadan, butane gas has become scarce in the city of Kaffrine. Many households are scouring shops and depots hoping to find a cylinder. For preparing "ndogou" (the breaking of the fast), many women usually prefer gas, which they consider quicker and more convenient.
In several neighborhood shops, the situation is the same: only empty cylinders fill the storage areas. In Ndiobène, shopkeeper Alimou Ba explains: “Since the beginning of Ramadan, I haven’t been able to get butane gas for my customers. I get customers from other neighborhoods looking for gas almost every day. It’s really hard for us because this is the month when we sell the most gas cylinders. So, to be honest, it’s slowing down our profits.”
On the scene, a housewife, accompanied by her child and holding an empty bottle, described her ordeal: “I’ve been looking for a gas cylinder in the shops for over five days. I live in the Diamaguène-Centre neighborhood, and I’ve been to every shop there, but there’s no gas in the city. This was my last hope, but unfortunately… I’m forced to go and buy charcoal. And you know very well that cooking with charcoal is very difficult; you’ll have to start very early, and it’s hot in Kaffrine.”
Indeed, many households are resorting to charcoal to prepare their iftar meal. This is a difficult situation for families, even though, according to several accounts, a 6 kg gas cylinder still costs 3,200 CFA francs.
