"The coastal erosion situation is still ongoing." These are the words of the mayor of Kafountine in response to a question about the problem of coastal erosion and the approach of new authorities to find a solution to this scourge.

Because, for David Diatta, there is today a clear desire from the new authorities to find solutions for the protection of the Kafountine coastline and to face the advance of the sea.

"I know that the highest authorities are very sensitive to the issue and that today, with the Invest in Senegal forum, the Kafountine fishing port project has been included as a priority project. And that will help address the advance of the sea. I know that there is also the ecological monitoring center which has now conducted fairly advanced studies on the issue," he said.

The mayor of Kafountine learned that he had established a partnership with a lessor as part of the protection of the coastline from Kafountine to Cap Skirring in Diembéring.

"We even had to find a partner who is ready to invest in the protection of the coastline from Kafountine to Cap Skirring in Diembéring. […], if today the Senegalese authorities talk about hidden debts, uncontrolled debts, the consequences are so serious that we, Kafountine, are suffering. Because not only with the will of the government, the partner we had, who required the State guarantee to start the work, with an investment of 50 billion, today we are suffering the negative consequences of this hidden debt, this excessive debt, contracted by the outgoing regime," he explained.

David Diatta reports that a more appropriate formula for coastal protection in Casamance is in the making. He states: "We are currently finding the best formula to truly secure funding for coastal protection in lower Casamance, from Kafountine to Diembéring."

Kafountine Mayor David Diatta makes no secret of his commitment to taking up the fight against the problem of sea encroachment. However, he explains that he has taken a step back from media coverage of this issue due to the accessibility of the environment and fisheries ministers, who are primarily concerned by this problem.
