The Prefect of Kédougou, El Hadj Malick Sémou Diouf, conducted a field trip this morning to raise awareness among residents and merchants illegally occupying public roads. This initiative is part of a prevention effort and a reminder to respect current regulations.

"The occupation of public roads is strictly prohibited. It can only be done exceptionally, on a temporary and revocable basis, on lightweight and easily dismantled installations," the prefect recalled, stressing the need to comply with the texts.

According to him, more and more traders are haphazardly setting up their stalls, carts, and shelters on sidewalks and road rights-of-way. This situation, beyond its aesthetic appeal, threatens pedestrian safety and disrupts traffic. "What we are unfortunately seeing is that these occupations have a real impact on the safety of road users. It is therefore urgent to reorganize public spaces," he insisted.

He also called for close collaboration between local authorities, businesses, and the general public to find a concerted and lasting solution. "We appeal to all stakeholders to work together to achieve a harmonious reorganization of public spaces," he said.

Regarding the measures already taken, El Hadj Malick Sémou Diouf indicated that summonses have been issued to the affected occupants. He hopes that these deadlines will be met to avoid any forced intervention. "We hope not to encounter any difficulty in freeing the occupied areas," he concluded.

This awareness-raising operation marks a new stage in the policy of restoring order and fluidity in urban traffic in Kédougou, a rapidly expanding city where control of public space is becoming a major issue in local governance.
