Kédougou : un jeune orpailleur meurt dans un éboulement
A new tragedy occurred this Sunday, March 8th, at a gold mining site near the village of Bondala, in the Kédougou region. A young gold miner lost his life following a landslide that occurred while he was trying to protect himself from the intense heat.
According to information gathered at the scene, the victim had taken refuge under a rock formation to escape the sun, a common practice among workers at these artisanal mining sites. Unfortunately, the rock structure suddenly gave way, causing a landslide that buried him under the debris. Despite the immediate efforts of his companions to free him and provide assistance, their attempts proved futile.
The victim, identified by the initials WD, was a 25-year-old Senegalese man residing in Saiensoutou. His body was taken to the morgue at the Kédougou Regional Hospital.
A craft sector in search of security
This latest accident once again highlights the critical dangers associated with artisanal gold mining in eastern Senegal. Every year, hundreds of gold miners expose themselves to major risks of landslides or tunnel collapses in precarious working conditions.
In response to these repeated tragedies, several local stakeholders are calling for better organization of the sector. Their recommendations include the establishment of safe gold mining corridors and stricter regulation of activities to prevent further loss of life.
