Keur Massar : Mariama Coulibaly tuée, son mari recherché, Siggil Jigéen réclame justice
Beaten to death in Keur Massar, Mariama Coulibaly finally succumbed to her injuries "in total indifference." Her husband, the alleged perpetrator, is on the run. Thus, the Siggil Jiggéen network issued a statement today to denounce yet another "femicide."
"Senegal can no longer remain silent. The Siggil Jigéen network expresses its deep indignation and sadness, revolted by the announcement of the death of Mariama Coulibaly, brutally beaten by her husband in Keur Massar (Taïba 2). This young woman succumbed to her injuries in almost total indifference, before being buried in solitude, far from her loved ones, far from justice. Her name is added to a list that has become unbearable of women killed because they are women," the network stated.
Not stopping there, he insists: "A list that grows longer, while the State looks the other way. Mariama died, like so many others, at the hands of a partner who should have protected her. Mariama died because our society does not listen to women. Mariama died because domestic violence is still not considered a major emergency. Mariama died in a country that calls itself a state of law, even though the most basic rights were denied her: the right to live, to be protected, to be believed."
Siggil Jigéen said it condemns this despicable act of femicide in the strongest possible terms. "We call on the Senegalese authorities to end their inaction and indifference in the face of the upsurge in violence against women," the members declared.
They therefore demand the immediate arrest of the alleged perpetrator on the run and the holding of an exemplary trial to ensure justice for Mariama, the urgent implementation of effective mechanisms for the prevention, protection and care of women victims of violence throughout the country, and the adoption of clear, dissuasive and enforced laws against femicide and all gender-based violence.
To Senegalese society, they are making a strong appeal: "Let's break the silence, reject indifference, and put an end to impunity. Femicide is not a news item. It is the symptom of a profoundly unjust and patriarchal system, which we all have a duty to combat. Mariama Coulibaly is not just another name. She is the cry of alarm from a country that must choose: protect its women or bury them," they say.
Before stating: "The Siggil Jigéen network is committed, once again, to standing alongside all those who refuse fear, humiliation and violence. We will remain standing, for Mariama, for all the others and for all those we can still save."
