Kolda : Un incendie dévastateur au centre-ville réduit sept etablissements en cendres
A fire of unusual intensity broke out in downtown Kolda on the night of Wednesday, December 10th. Alerted, firefighters intervened to contain the flames, but the material damage is considerable.
According to initial estimates, at least seven establishments housing various income-generating activities—forges, eateries, and a mechanic's garage—were completely reduced to ashes. No loss of life was reported, but the material damage is considered "immeasurable": tools, vehicles, and professional equipment were entirely destroyed.
The social consequences are immediate: more than 50 people are now without work. Although the prefectural authority has promised to report on the situation to facilitate assistance, the first aid supplies have yet to arrive.
Among the victims is Thierno Badiane, president of the Association of True Automotive Craftsmen of Senegal (REVAS), whose garage was completely destroyed. "Four vehicles, my diagnostic equipment, and all my work tools were reduced to ashes. We are requesting assistance from the authorities to resume our activities and meet our needs."
Large-scale fires are becoming increasingly common in the Escale district of Kolda. In January 2024, a wholesale store located in the same area was destroyed by a similar blaze, resulting in losses of several hundred million CFA francs.
This situation reignites the debate on insurance coverage in the Kolda region, where the majority of traders and artisans have no financial protection against such risks.
