Lutte contre les MGF à Sédhiou : Un plaidoyer pour renforcer la prise en charge des victimes
In Sédhiou, the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) has taken on an urgent dimension, as the prevalence rate in the region is estimated at 48.1%. On the occasion of the national "Zero Tolerance" day, the youth network for the abandonment of FGM initiated a regional advocacy meeting bringing together administrative authorities, local elected officials, and religious leaders. According to Mamadou Jo Ba, coordinator of the Sédhiou Adolescent Center, this meeting aimed to reiterate the State's commitments and intensify the fight against this devastating violence against women and girls.
One of the major issues raised during the discussions concerned the ability of stakeholders to effectively support victims. Mamadou Jo Ba emphasized the need to "strengthen the support system" by enhancing the skills of those working in the field. However, the challenges remain structural and require increased material and logistical resources to translate intentions into concrete actions.
To address these shortcomings, Demba Samba Ba, the network's focal point, officially submitted several grievances to the regional authorities. The young people are calling, in particular, for the creation of a dedicated reception center to offer safe haven and support to victims. Furthermore, they are advocating for the empowerment of local stakeholders and the implementation of an effective monitoring mechanism to ensure the strict application of existing legislation.
