Macky Sall à l’ONU ? : Alioune Sow plaide pour un soutien officiel du Sénégal
Alioune Sow, a former minister under President Macky Sall and leader of the MPD/LIGGEEY party, has commented on Macky Sall's rumored candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations. According to him, the national interest must take precedence over political divisions.
"The State must be above emotions. We must put Senegal above all considerations," he affirmed during the "Grand Jury" program on RFM this Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Mr. Sow urges President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to overcome partisan rivalries. He believes that the prospect of a former Senegalese head of state leading the UN represents "a historic opportunity" for Senegal's diplomatic influence.
Alioune Sow believes that Macky Sall "ticks all the boxes", mentioning international experience, a solid network with his counterparts and credibility acquired on major global issues.
He cautioned, however, that "it would be a difficult task for him to run with his country against him. Senegal doesn't deserve that." In other words, such an ambition could not succeed without the clear and explicit support of the Senegalese state.
When questioned by journalist Macoumba Bèye about a possible return of Macky Sall to the national political arena, the former minister expressed his preference for a strictly international career. "I would have liked to see him distinguish himself exclusively at the international level, in the promotion of peace and development," he confided.
According to him, combining global ambitions and internal squabbles could muddy the message and create diplomatic interference.
