With the Magal of Touba just days away, scheduled for August 13, 2025, Senegal's motorcycle associations, groups, and clubs are taking a stand. In a statement released this Saturday, they called on the authorities to address the incidents that occurred during the previous edition of the Magal, denouncing practices deemed arbitrary and unjustified against motorcyclists.

  Arrests without legal basis

On Friday, August 23, 2024, "several motorcyclists en route to Touba were stopped on the Ila Touba toll highway. Despite presenting proper documents (ID, insurance, driver's license, and registration document), their motorcycles were immobilized, the keys confiscated, and the drivers forced to continue on foot. No official explanation was provided, nor any regulatory text cited to justify these measures," the motorcyclists said.

The associations denounce a serious violation of users' rights and highlight the safety risks faced by motorcyclists on an expressway that is supposed to guarantee fluidity and safety.

  A stigma deemed unfair

The signatories of the press release point out that motorcycles are an essential means of transportation for thousands of Senegalese, used for professional, personal, or recreational purposes. They emphasize that motorcyclists, especially those riding large motorcycles, are generally well-trained, responsible, and respectful of the Highway Code.

"It is unfair and dangerous to apply a discriminatory generalization on the basis of isolated acts," the text reads.

Citizen initiatives for a secure Magal

Far from simply denouncing, Senegalese motorcyclists have taken concrete steps to contribute to road safety by organizing a national awareness campaign. They have also distributed safety equipment (helmets, gloves, vests) and assistance kits on the Dakar-Touba road and actively promoted compliance with the Highway Code.

They reaffirm their commitment alongside the State to reduce accidents and save lives, while refusing any arbitrary stigmatization.

The bikers solemnly call on the Ministries of Infrastructure, Land and Air Transport, Interior, and Public Security to clarify the regulations governing motorcycle traffic on the Ila Touba highway during the Magal. They demand an end to abusive measures and consultation with their organizations to ensure a smooth, secure event that respects the rights of all.
