Matam : les machines d'Ama Afrique vandalisées, les chantiers de phosphate suspendus
In Agnam, local protests against phosphate mining have escalated considerably. Following a series of marches, several acts of vandalism have been reported, targeting the mining equipment of Ama Afrique, the company in charge of the operations. These events have heightened tensions in the area, prompting law enforcement to secure the zone.
Faced with the threat of escalating violence, the governor of the Matam region, Saïd Dia, accompanied by a delegation from the Ministry of Energy, traveled to the area to initiate a dialogue with the various stakeholders. The meeting took place at the sub-prefecture of Agnam Civol, bringing together all local actors: the mayors of the surrounding municipalities, including the mayor of Agnam, Farba Ngom, as well as several village chiefs. This gathering aimed to calm the situation and clarify certain misunderstandings between the local population and the operating company.
The governor stated that many disagreements stemmed from a lack of communication, misunderstandings, and poorly disseminated information. He emphasized that this meeting had helped defuse tensions by clearly explaining the differences between prospecting and mining. Contrary to what some residents believed, the current objective is not to extract resources, but solely to conduct exploratory visits to assess the site's potential. According to the governor, these explanations have given the local population a better understanding of the issues at stake, and he plans to hold another meeting soon to define the next steps and continue discussions.
Regarding the damage to the prospecting equipment, the authority confirmed that these acts of vandalism had severely damaged the machines in operation. Consequently, all activity has been temporarily suspended until the equipment is repaired. The governor announced that once these repairs are completed, further consultations will be held to decide on the next steps for the project in consultation with all stakeholders.
However, residents of the Agnam district reiterated their categorical opposition to any form of prospecting or mining in the area. In the Agnam commune, they believe the site in question could be used for housing in the future and demand that any mining activity be preceded by thorough consultation with local communities. Hamady Ba, a spokesperson for the residents, emphasized the importance of prior community consent and denounced what he perceives as an excessive use of force and a blatant disregard for local opinions, particularly those expressed by mayors and village chiefs. He concluded by making an urgent appeal to the Head of State to halt this process, which he considers abusive and contrary to the interests of the local population.
