Mbour : la «awo» défigure sa coépouse pour une simple...
In Mbour, a violent altercation between co-wives ended up in the local court. The case stemmed from a trivial dispute over a simple can of drink.
“FS Sow, the first wife of a Mbour emigrant living in Europe, receives a relative at her marital home in the Guinaw Rail neighborhood. She then turns to her co-wife, M. Dioum, who is in charge of managing the holiday supplies, to get a can of beer. Categorical refusal: “There are none left. The last one was drunk by my son,” recounts L’Observateur, which attended the hearing.
Convinced that this was a deliberate humiliation, especially since their husband had bought three cases of drinks, the first wife unleashed her anger in the kitchen. The argument escalated: FS Sow grabbed a pestle and struck her rival twice in the back.
Mr. Dioum, who lost consciousness, was not out of the woods yet. His co-wife grabbed a sharp object and slashed his face, particularly his jaw. Neighbors had to intervene to pull him from his rival's grasp. The victim suffered injuries resulting in 10 days of temporary incapacity for work.
In court, the defendant attempted to downplay the events, claiming it was merely a slap and denouncing her co-wife's "whims," before finally apologizing. To everyone's surprise, the victim granted her forgiveness and waived any claim for damages, asking only for respect and a "peaceful cohabitation."
Despite this withdrawal, concludes the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group, the court found FS Sow guilty of the charges and sentenced her to a four-month suspended prison sentence.
