Axe Médina Sabakh-Diama Gadio : Une route stratégique devenue un calvaire
The road linking Medina Sabakh to Diama Gadio, with a total length of 31 kilometers, 16 km between Medina Sabakh and Ngayène Sabakh, and 15 km between Ngayène and Diama Gadio, occupies a central place in regional mobility. It constitutes an extension of the road axis that stretches from Kaffrine to Diama Gadio and represents not only an essential shortcut to Gambia, but also a strategic corridor facilitating trade with Kaffrine, Touba, Tambacounda, Kidira and, beyond, Mali.
However, Mohamed Lamine Diouf and his comrades, residents of the Nioro department, were offended during a press briefing, "despite this geostrategic and socio-economic importance, the state of the road remains highly worrying. The lack of tarmac and the extent of the damage make its use particularly difficult, if not impossible, during the rainy season."
In these conditions, they point out that "many drivers refuse to continue to Medina Sabakh, thus accentuating the isolation of the localities concerned and the weakening of economic and social exchanges."
According to Mohamed Lamine Diouf, a member of the Cercle des cadres of La République des Valeurs/Réewum Ngor, "the human and social consequences are particularly critical. "Transporting a sick person to Medina Sabakh can require nearly two hours of travel over a relatively short distance, which aggravates health emergencies," he said. This example, he said, illustrates the considerable social and human costs caused by the advanced state of degradation of this road.
Faced with this observation, the local populations, joined by several economic and social actors, insistently formulate the demand for the tarmacking of the Diama Gadio-Médina Sabakh axis. This request, indicates Diouf, "cannot be considered as a simple local grievance, but rather as a national priority, given the importance of this axis in terms of opening up, economic revitalization and sub-regional integration."
Thus, he believes, "the rehabilitation of this road must be considered as a strategic issue, at the intersection of territorial development, social justice and cross-border cooperation." He adds: "Prolonged inaction risks transforming a potentially integrating infrastructure into an aggravating factor of exclusion and marginalization of local populations."
Lamine Diouf hopes that ultimately, the Diama Gadio-Ngayène Sabakh-Médina Sabakh road, today perceived as a "road of oblivion", will be imperatively reclassified as a "road of hope", through "voluntary and rapid public action, responding to the legitimate expectations of citizens and the imperatives of national development".
