Conflit minier à Kanel : Un collectif se dresse contre l'exploitation du phosphate
The residents of the villages of Séno Palel, Kolel, and Gourel Boulbi, located in the Kanel department, are firmly opposed to phosphate mining on their land. Organized into a resistance group, they denounced, during a demonstration, the "land grabbing and abusive exploitation" of their land by a mining company operating in the area.
The unfortunate situation, according to Sadou Chérif Daff, the coordinator of the collective, is that mineral extraction is being carried out without transparency or adequate information. He stated that "the distraught local populations are witnessing the dispossession of their land without any consultation regarding the mining operations, and consequently without sufficient guarantees for the protection of their living environment."
Challenging the legitimacy of a company report which claims to have been consulted with local populations, the collective for the defense of the interests of Séno Palel intends to initiate legal proceedings against the company holding the operation for "forgery and use of forged documents" and other breaches.
Faced with environmental and health threats, the group asked the competent authorities to cancel the provisional report drawn up by the company, and also the ministerial decree which allowed it to obtain an operating permit.
Deeply concerned about the phosphate mining project in Séno Palel, which in their opinion poses an enormous risk to the population, residents of the village have mobilized through petition and advocacy actions.
In a request addressed to the authorities, Samba Bocoum highlighted the harmful nature of the exploitation of the phosphates of Séno Palel.
He believes the project risks contaminating the soil, water, and air, thus threatening local ecosystems. "Soil pollution could render our farmland unusable, jeopardizing our food security. Water, a precious and vital resource, could be polluted, affecting both wildlife and human populations dependent on these freshwater sources. As for the air, a decline in its quality could lead to serious respiratory illnesses among local residents," he explains.
