Ndome (Tivaouane) : Mort par noyade d'un garçon de 12 ans dans un bassin de rétention
There is consternation in Ndome, a village in the commune of Pire, in the department of Tivaouane, with the death, by drowning, of a boy of around twelve years old, this last Tuesday afternoon, in a rainwater retention basin.
According to emergency services, the victim, the son of the village chief of Ndome, lost his balance and was swallowed up by the waters while swimming with friends at around 3:45 p.m. As he could not swim, he was unable to stay afloat.
Firefighters from the Tivaouane fire station, alerted by the victim's father, quickly rushed to the scene to retrieve the teenager's lifeless body, in the presence of the gendarmes. The body was taken to the morgue of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaouane.
Yet another opportunity for the population to warn against the danger posed by the water retention basins dug as part of the construction work on the Dakar-Tivaouane-Saint-Louis highway, which frequently attract children in search of coolness.
Their depth, combined with the lack of signage and safety fencing, makes them particularly dangerous, especially during hot weather. In fact, similar cases of drowning have already been reported in several towns along the motorway route.
