Plus de 3 millions F CFA d'acomptes volatilisés : comment la « terreur » des commerçants de Thiaroye est tombée dans une souricière
The Thiaroye police station put an end to the activities of Modou S., a 30-year-old man who had specialized in large-scale fraud targeting traders in the suburbs of Dakar.
According to L'Observateur, which reported the story, Modou S. used a simple but effective technique to trap his victims: he offered stocks of goods (empty onion bags, jerseys, potatoes) at incredibly low prices. Once he had his prey hooked, he demanded a substantial deposit before delivery. As soon as he received the money, he disappeared or abandoned his victims in deserted warehouses, sometimes giving them forged documents to buy time.
Among the victims, Ndiaga S. was defrauded of 1.25 million CFA francs for an order of empty bags. Three other victims (Modou G., Khadim D., and Ibrahima N.) lost a combined total of 1.75 million CFA francs in fictitious sales of clothing and food, adds the newspaper of the Future Media Group.
The fatal mousetrap
After escaping several attempts to set a trap, the conman was finally arrested on Monday. His latest victim, aware of his reputation, pretended to agree to a transaction involving a stock of onions while discreetly alerting the Thiaroye police. Officers set up surveillance at the meeting place, allowing them to apprehend the individual in the act. Faced with a large number of victims who came to file complaints, Modou S. eventually confessed. He is currently in police custody, the same source added.
