Paix en Casamance : De jeunes artistes sensibilisent à travers leurs expressions
The Ziguinchor Regional Cultural Center hosted a distinguished gathering of young cultural figures called upon to be major players in promoting peace in Casamance through their artistic expression. This was a joint initiative of the European Union and the management of the Ziguinchor Regional Cultural Center.
Some forty young people selected from across the region's three departments, Bignona, Oussouye and Ziguinchor, showcased their talents through a competition "Let's celebrate peace through art." This was a way to raise their awareness of the need for a definitive return to peace in this southern region of the country, marked by a conflict that has lasted far too long, and for them in turn to engage in this process of seeking definitive peace.
Of the forty or so works created by these young people, 10 were finally chosen and awarded prizes in the presence of several authorities, including Governor Mor Talla Tine and a delegation from the European Union.
"Everyone demonstrated creativity and talent, and the jury of professionals was not an easy choice. In the end, 10 works by women and men were selected," said Anne Catherine Claude, who led the European Union delegation.
The works artistically and graphically illustrate the challenges of peace, which are essential to the development and well-being of all. And according to Anne Catherine Claude, these works also demonstrate the creativity, resilience, and hope of the people of Casamance.
The Governor of the Ziguinchor region, who presided over the ceremony, praised the work of these young people and the theme on which they had to work.
Cheikh Thiam, a terracotta pottery artist from the Oussouye department, won first prize. This young man expressed his satisfaction to the organizers of this initiative, while hoping that his work, through its expression, will be able to contribute to this quest for peace in Casamance.
The director of the Ziguinchor Regional Cultural Center, Ndeye Marianne Diop, recalled that for this current competition to promote peace through art, a call for applications was made and it was through this call that 40 young people's files were selected for the creation of works related to the theme.
