Pénurie de pomme de terre à Fatick à l’approche de Noël
On the eve of Christmas celebrations, potatoes have become impossible to find in Fatick. This staple, highly prized during the festive season, is scarce in shops, causing a significant price increase and consumer dissatisfaction.
At the central market in Fatick, as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods, the stalls, usually well-stocked with potatoes, are almost empty. When available, a kilogram sells for between 900 and 1,000 CFA francs, compared to 600 to 700 CFA francs a few weeks ago.
According to traders interviewed, this shortage is linked to the disruption of local potatoes, while awaiting the arrival of imported potatoes, in addition to strong seasonal demand.
"The trucks are arriving in dribs and drabs. Demand is very high because of the holidays, but supply is not keeping up," explains Bella, a vendor at the central market in Fatick.
On the household side, the situation is causing concern and frustration. Since potatoes are a staple ingredient in festive meals, especially for Christmas, many families say they are forced to reduce their purchases or turn to substitute products.
"I went around to all the shops in my neighborhood to buy potatoes, but I couldn't find any. It's not easy to cook like before," laments Marth Emma, a housewife.
While waiting for the situation to improve, consumers in Fatick hope for a quick return to normal, so that they can celebrate the end-of-year holidays in better conditions.
