Pointe-Sarène (Mbour) : Omar Sy privatise sa rue pour « raisons de sécurité », les voisins s'insurgent
Security barriers, armed guards, and strictly controlled access: actor Omar Sy's residence in Pointe-Sarène is at the heart of a heated controversy. Invoking their right to peace and security, the Sy family has decided to transform a public road on the Petite Côte into a private residential zone, a measure that has angered the neighborhood.
In a letter to local residents, Mr. and Mrs. Sy announced the imminent installation of two access barriers. To justify this drastic measure, the couple cited a situation that had become "untenable": rising insecurity on the Petite Côte, repeated intrusions, noise pollution from tourist ATVs, and serious invasions of privacy. The actor specifically denounced drones flying over his property, intrusive photos of his children, and curious onlookers turning his front yard into a tourist attraction.
A high-security system financed with own funds
The new system will be operational within two weeks. It will be managed by a security company employing three armed guards, whose expenses are entirely covered by the Sy family. Access rules will now be strict: prior registration of license plates, visitors must be announced in advance, and filming or photographing the areas surrounding the properties is strictly prohibited.
The Sy family maintains that they are acting entirely legally, citing an agreement with the town hall, the prefecture, and the gendarmerie. They also point out that they personally financed, alongside the Dia family, essential infrastructure in the area: road paving, water, electricity, and sanitation connections.
The neighbors' revolt is organizing.
Despite these arguments, the decision has been poorly received by the other residents. They denounce a "de facto privatization" of a shared space and an unacceptable restriction on freedom of movement. Beyond the inconvenience caused, they question the legality of armed private security guards conducting checks on a public thoroughfare.
This case raises a thorny question: how far can a public figure go to protect their privacy without infringing on collective rights? As the neighborhood prepares to take legal action to challenge this decision, tensions are rising on the Petite Côte between the desire for discretion and a feeling of exclusion.
