Popenguine 2026 : la jeunesse de Ziguinchor marche dans la ferveur derrière son évêque
The Catholic youth of the diocese of Ziguinchor are preparing with fervor for the 138th edition of the Popenguine pilgrimage, a major spiritual event placed this year under the responsibility of the diocese.

Ziguinchor is providing the religious services for the pilgrimage, and its bishop, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Valter Manga, will preside over the Eucharistic celebration, the central moment of this year's event. More than 1,000 participants have responded to the call of Bishop Jean-Baptiste Valter Manga of the Diocese of Ziguinchor.

An exceptional mobilization
The bishop's appeal to gather 1,000 young pilgrims has now been fulfilled. More than 500 walkers, 600 choir members, as well as volunteers and parishioners from all parts of the diocese, answered the call. The delegation, already settled in Dakar at the Martyrs of Uganda Cemetery, exemplifies the vitality of a generation ready to bear witness to its faith and its devotion to its pastor.

Before the departure, the Secretary General of Youth Ministry, Christian Mendy, emphasized the importance of this mobilization: "Given that the diocese is being honored, every young person marching on behalf of the Diocese of Ziguinchor must be an ambassador and leave a good image so that our bishop is pleased with his youth."
A walk of faith and prayer
Beyond the logistical arrangements, the organizers emphasize the spiritual dimension. The young people are encouraged to walk in faith, to follow the instructions, and to experience Popenguine as a path of prayer and communion. Christian Mendy stresses: "If you follow these instructions, you will go to pray to the Virgin Mary and you will return safe and sound."

A call for peace and unity
The march was entrusted to the Virgin Mary. "We ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to allow us to leave Ziguinchor, go to Popenguine, and return safe and sound. We also pray for peace in Casamance, for our families, for our bishop, but also for Senegal and for Africa."

This edition promises to be a symbol of unity and fervor. Led by their bishop, the young people of Ziguinchor intend to carry the torch of faith high and demonstrate their commitment to peace and cohesion in the country.
