As the 138th Marian pilgrimage to Popenguine approaches, scheduled for May 23-25, 2026, the administrative authorities of the Thiès region are intensifying preparations. Meeting as a regional development committee (CRD), the relevant departments reviewed the necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth running of this important religious event.

Speaking after the discussions, Governor Thiès, Saër Ndao, made a solemn appeal to the population. He stressed the need for responsible behavior, particularly on the roads, in a context marked by the overlap with other religious events likely to lead to significant population movements.

"The concept of zero accidents is possible if everyone respects the rules and other road users," he said, stressing the importance of civic responsibility and respect for road safety standards.

The governor also emphasized the importance of emergency vehicle traffic, particularly ambulances. He reiterated that they must have absolute priority, while also condemning some drivers' undisciplined behavior. "As soon as an emergency vehicle signals its approach, it is absolutely essential to yield the right-of-way," he stressed.

On the organizational level, Saër Ndao wants to reassure: all key sectors have been taken into account: security, health, hygiene, water supply, electricity, transport and logistics.

The governor stated that the various services involved have made firm commitments, although some constraints still need to be addressed to ensure optimal implementation.

Finally, Saër Ndao stressed the need for fluid and continuous communication between field services before, during and after the pilgrimage in order to minimize difficulties and ensure efficient organization.

Thus, the authorities intend to offer pilgrims the best conditions to carry out their spiritual journey in complete safety.
