Ramadan et Carême à Matam : Cherté du poisson, fruits et légumes à prix raisonnables
Fish, a popular dinner choice for many families during this period of fasting, is seeing its price rise in the market, particularly due to the increased cost of freshwater fish. The highly sought-after Nile perch (captain fish) sells for between 2,500 and 45,000 francs depending on its size and weight. Carp, which cost 3,000 francs per kilogram, are becoming scarce, making it even more difficult to find affordable fish. Catfish and tilapia are selling for between 5,000 and 7,000 francs.
Faced with these high prices, some consumers are looking for less expensive options by turning to saltwater fish, which are often cheaper. There are the "yaye boye" and the "jaaye," which sell for 1,000 francs for three, as well as the "guiss." While four or five red mullet sell for 2,500 francs, a kilogram of white carp, called "sompate," also costs 2,500 francs, and a kilogram of escolar fish, known as "beurre," goes for 3,500 francs.
As for fruits and vegetables, there is a sufficient supply at reasonable prices in the various sales outlets and markets. The central market of Ourossogui, like that of Matam, is well-stocked with cabbage, carrots, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, beets, and potatoes.
The same observation can be made regarding fruit. During the fast, vendors stocked their stalls well. Available fruits such as tangerines, coconuts, bananas (local or imported), oranges, dates, and especially watermelons were plentiful in the markets. Salamata, a fruit vendor in Matam, confided that she earns a good living selling watermelons, which are very popular for breaking the fast. Prices vary according to size: large watermelons cost between 2,500 and 3,000 francs, while smaller ones are 1,000 or 1,500 francs.
