Ramadan à Kaolack : Le sous-secteur du conditionnement de l’eau de boisson tourne au ralenti
With its brackish taste, the drinking water in Kaolack is practically undrinkable. This situation has been exploited by local businesses that have invested in outlets selling distilled water in sachets and in bulk. This activity generates millions of water sachets in the Saloum region, where the harsh climate compels people to constantly rely on this source.
However, with Ramadan coinciding with Lent, the water sales sector has practically ground to a halt. Moctar Camara manages a factory producing sachets and bulk water. He explains that "the month of fasting has greatly impacted sachet sales. People hardly consume water sachets during the day in the city. At night at home, they prefer jerrycans. We're seeing a 15% increase in sales. We can produce 300 to 500 sachets. With Ramadan, we're down to between 40 and 50 sachets, a maximum of 100 sachets."
Retailers are seeing a drop in sales. This is the case for a shopkeeper in the heart of Kaolack who points out that water sales during this Ramadan period have practically stagnated.
