Rapport ANSD: Moins de chômage, mais pour qui ?
According to the latest data from ANSD, the unemployment rate in Senegal reached 22.3% at the end of 2023 before stabilizing at around 20.3% throughout 2024.
In the second quarter of 2025, it is estimated at 19%, reflecting a gradual decrease in unemployment and suggesting a modest improvement in the job market. This trend reflects in particular the impact of public policies for integration and support for entrepreneurship, as well as the development of certain job-creating sectors such as agriculture, services and technology.
Investment in infrastructure and the modernization of value chains are also helping to generate new opportunities, particularly in construction, agri-food and financial services.
Despite this decline, unemployment remains a major challenge, with marked disparities between regions and population groups. Urban youth and women continue to experience higher rates, while some rural areas still face difficulties accessing formal employment and sustainable economic activities. Structural unemployment and underemployment therefore remain persistent challenges that fully hamper the integration of the labor force into the national economic fabric.
This situation highlights the need to continue economic diversification, strengthen vocational training programs and support small and medium-sized enterprises.
The current rate of decline in unemployment remains moderate, and the structural transformation of the Senegalese labor market will require continued mobilization of public and private resources to ensure sustainable gains. The challenge is twofold: to stimulate job creation while improving the quality of these positions so that they meet the aspirations and skills of a young and rapidly growing population.
