Chômage en hausse : Le signal d'alarme malgré un marché du travail dynamique
The Senegalese job market showed contradictory signals in the first quarter of 2026. According to the national employment survey (ENES) published by the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) cited by RTS, unemployment is increasing despite increased participation of Senegalese in active life.
The broad unemployment rate reached 22.9%, compared to 21.7% a year earlier. The increase particularly affected young people (28.4%), women, and residents of rural areas, where nearly one in three working-age adults is unemployed.
In comparison, urban unemployment stands at 17.4%. Paradoxically, the activity rate has increased slightly, to 56.5%. Adults remain more present in the labor market (69.4%) than young people (48.6%), and men more so than women.
Overall employment is stagnating at 40.2%, but salaried employment continues to gain ground: it now represents 43.5% of jobs, compared to 41.6% in 2025. Self-employment, however, remains dominant, affecting more than half of the workforce (54.4%), especially women. The phenomenon of young people aged "NEET" (not in employment, education, or training) remains a concern: 34.1% of 15-24 year olds are affected, a proportion that rises to 47.4% in rural areas and 41.8% among young women.
This snapshot of the labor market highlights a paradox: more Senegalese are entering the workforce, but access to sustainable and quality employment remains the main challenge.
