Saint-Louis : Le préfet dévoile les mesures préventives face aux lâchers d’eau de Manantali

As water releases from the Manantali dam approach, which could cause flooding in the department of Saint-Louis, local authorities are seeking reassurance. Prefect Abou Sow detailed on Wednesday the measures taken to limit risks and protect the population.

"For several months now, we have been preparing for the river's flooding. The Minister of Hydraulics has taken the lead by convening the national committee on several occasions. All necessary arrangements are underway," the prefect stated.

At the regional level, a prevention plan was developed and validated during a Regional Development Committee (CRD) chaired by the governor. It is already in the implementation phase, including the deployment of firefighters in the various departments concerned.

Saint-Louis, “at the end of the chain”

The prefect pointed out that the department of Saint-Louis is located "at the end of the chain," which means that the effects of water releases from the Manantali dam are felt approximately two weeks later. The presence of the Diama dam, however, provides additional time to act.

"On the ground, we have already made arrangements at our level. The plan implemented last year will be repeated, but with better preparation. Last year, we were surprised. This time, we are more prepared," he assured.

Material and human resources mobilized

Sandbags provided by the ministry have been distributed to local communities and associations. In addition, the regional mining department is providing sand to fill these bags and build dikes in the most vulnerable areas.

The prefect also emphasized the need to support populations that could be affected. "All affected households will be supported. As last year, we plan to set up a camp to accommodate the displaced, provide them with shelter, security, and support them until the waters recede," he said.

However, the prefect of Saint-Louis acknowledged that there is no such thing as zero risk, but he expressed confidence in the ability of the state and local authorities to cope with the situation. "We cannot guarantee that there will be no damage, but we are well prepared and we will work with the population to deal with any eventuality, hoping that this year the floods will be less severe than last year's."
