Saint-Louis : les motos-taxis « Jakarta » bloquent le pont Faidherbe et crient leur ras-le-bol
Traffic was severely disrupted in Saint-Louis on Wednesday following a protest by motorcycle taxi drivers, commonly known as "Jakarta." In a show of anger, they blocked the Faidherbe Bridge, the main link between the island and the mainland, causing major traffic jams.
Through this protest, the motorcycle taxi drivers intended to denounce the working conditions they consider increasingly difficult. At the forefront of their demands are repeated instances of police harassment.
According to their spokesperson Ibrahima Mbengue, law enforcement regularly obstructs their activities.
"The police are preventing us from working properly. Every time they stop us, they impound our motorcycles and make us pay a fine of 7,000 CFA francs," he lamented.
In addition to these checks, which they consider abusive, the protesters also point to the cumbersome administrative procedures related to motorcycle registration. They denounce the lengthy and complex processes, accompanied by fees deemed excessive, which place a heavy burden on their already precarious incomes.
