Saly Portudal : venu de Saint-Louis pour cambrioler une villa, il se fait piéger… par son propre sens de l’orientation
This is an unusual case that will be decided on March 3rd by the High Court of Mbour. L'Observateur reports that B. Diaw, a 30-year-old businessman who traveled from Saint-Louis, over 300 km away, was arrested after burglarizing a luxury villa in the seaside resort of Saly Portudal.
Taking advantage of the absence of the security guard at Villa 14 in the "Tennis" residence, the individual broke into the home of a French couple using sophisticated tools. He made off with a haul of gold and silver jewelry and other valuables.
Just when he thought he had pulled it off, the perpetrator was betrayed by his poor sense of direction. Lost in the maze of walkways within the residence, searching for a way out, he was spotted by the security guard "on his return from his shift." After a brief chase, the "visitor" was apprehended by security personnel, according to the newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias.
In court, the defendant admitted to having premeditated his trip from the old city to steal in Saly, justifying his actions by citing economic hardship in Saint-Louis. These explanations failed to convince the prosecutor, who requested the strict application of the law, the same source reports.
