To oppose the "illegal" construction of a shopping center in the immediate vicinity of the public restrooms at the Moussanté market, members of the "Samm Sama Gox" collective have taken action. This group, which brings together residents of the Gouye Sombel, Keur Serigne Abdoulaye Yakhine Diop, and Mbambara Alé Lô neighborhoods, as well as traders from the market located in the Thiès-Est district, held a press conference to express their dismay.

According to the coordinator of the collective, Saliou Mbaye, "the construction of such a building will lead to a systematic blockage of activities in the area. It will also constitute a potential danger, making any intervention by emergency vehicles, particularly firefighters, impossible in the event of a disaster."

Gathered in front of the building under construction, the protesters, who deem the situation "unacceptable," claim to have already contacted all the relevant authorities in Thiès, including the governor and all the mayors. They strongly denounce this "outrage that seems to have been imposed upon them" and provide details on the origin of the conflict: "The first aspect that hurts us in this affair is that the local residents have been misled. Initially, they were led to believe that it was simply a matter of relocating the secondhand clothing market."

However, they continued, "to our great surprise, we later realized there was something else behind it. The argument we were given was false; it was a case of misuse of funds and breach of trust. Gradually, we understood that the idea was to secretly build a shopping center without the knowledge of any of the social institutions in the neighborhood."

Determined to continue the fight firmly while remaining within the bounds of legality, the members of the collective also denounce an encroachment on the main access road leading into the market.
