SARAYA : Quatre orpailleurs périssent dans l’effondrement d’un site minier à Bembou
A tragedy occurred on Saturday in the department of Saraya. Four gold miners lost their lives following the collapse of a mining site located west of the village of Gamba-Gamba, in the commune of Bembou.
According to information gathered, a group of illegal gold miners, from several surrounding localities, had gathered on the site around 10 a.m. While many people were working around the extraction pits, the unstable walls of the site suddenly gave way, burying several workers under large quantities of sand and earth.
Alerted by the tragedy, the other gold miners present at the site immediately tried to organize a rescue operation. After several hours of effort, eight people were pulled from the rubble, four of whom were found dead.
The injured were evacuated and the lifeless bodies were transferred to the morgue of the Amath Dansokho Regional Hospital for autopsy.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of this landslide.
