Saraya : Deux morts dans un éboulement à Léfakho
A deadly landslide linked to artisanal gold mining has occurred in the town of Léfakho, in the Kédougou region, claiming two lives, according to local sources. The tragedy took place at an artisanal gold mining site where several miners were working in traditionally dug pits. The sudden collapse of a tunnel trapped the victims, despite rescue attempts by their companions on site.
With these two new deaths, the toll of accidents linked to landslides in the gold mining areas of southeastern Senegal now exceeds fifteen deaths in less than three months, illustrating the resurgence of tragedies on these high-risk sites.
In this gold-bearing region, artisanal mining attracts many young people looking for quick income, but working conditions remain marked by the absence of safety equipment, the chaotic digging of wells and the lack of technical supervision.
Faced with the increasing number of accidents, several local stakeholders are calling for strengthened surveillance measures and better organization of gold mining sites in order to limit the loss of human lives.
Meanwhile, emotions remain high in Léfakho where this new landslide plunges the population back into fear and mourning, in a context where tragedies linked to artisanal gold mining continue to worry authorities and local communities.
