Saraya : un éboulement fait 4 morts et 4 blessés sur un site d’orpaillage clandestin dans le périmètre d’AfriGold
A serious landslide occurred this Saturday, January 24, 2025, at around 10 a.m., in the area of the AfriGold mining company, located west of the village of Gamba-Gamba, in the commune of Bembou, department of Saraya.
According to multiple sources on site, a group of illegal gold miners from several surrounding areas entered the area that morning. While several people were working around makeshift mining pits, the site walls suddenly collapsed, burying several individuals under large masses of sand and earth.
Given the gravity of the situation, witnesses immediately tried to organize rescue efforts. After several hours of work, four injured people were pulled from the rubble. Sadly, four others were found dead.
The injured were reportedly evacuated to Mali before the arrival of investigators, which is currently complicating their identification.
Alerted, officers from the Saraya territorial gendarmerie brigade went to the scene to conduct the usual investigations. For safety reasons, the search was suspended and is expected to resume at a later date.
The four lifeless bodies are being evacuated to the Kédougou regional hospital for autopsy.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy, which occurred in a context of recurring illegal gold mining in the area.
