A case of theft of construction materials from a health center construction site in Ribot Escale has taken an unexpected turn. After filing a complaint himself, the construction manager found himself at the center of the scandal. A total of five people have been arrested.
As part of the construction of a health center in Ribot Escale, financed by the World Bank through Ageroute, a vast network of material theft was dismantled by the local community brigade.
The case involves not only workers but also the construction manager of ETIC, the subcontracting company responsible for the project.
A complaint that triggers the investigation
It all began when the construction manager of the ETIC company filed a complaint against an unknown person for the theft of materials from the construction site. Faced with these suspicious disappearances, the Ribot Escale brigade decided to act quickly. On October 2, all construction workers were summoned and asked to appear before the brigade for questioning.
Two workers caught red-handed
Investigations conducted by the brigade's investigators quickly led to the identification of the primary perpetrators of the thefts. Two workers, Mr. Sow and Mr. Diagne, were unmasked, according to Seneweb sources.
According to the investigation, the latter stole the cement around 2 a.m., taking advantage of the darkness to act discreetly. They used a cart pulled by a donkey to transport their loot.
The damage did not stop there: in addition to the cement, the two accomplices also stole 200 kilograms of iron intended for the construction of the health center.
Once the materials were stolen, they sold them to a fence.
Investigations have led to the tracing of the chain. The two workers sold the stolen cement to a certain D. Camara, who was in turn arrested for receiving stolen goods. The latter was well aware that the materials were the result of a theft but did not hesitate to acquire them at a knockdown price, according to the investigation.
The complainant becomes a suspect: the construction manager is arrested
But the investigation was about to hold a major surprise. Two days after the first arrests, while broadening the scope of their investigation, the police made a stunning discovery: the construction manager himself, the very one who had filed the complaint, was implicated in a much larger theft.
It was established that he had previously sold two tons of cement to a local teacher. This teacher, who may have been unaware of the fraudulent origin of the materials, was in turn arrested by the Ribot Escale local police force for receiving stolen goods.
Five people brought before the public prosecutor
The five accused were brought before the Kaffrine High Court on Monday where they will have to answer for their actions in court.
