Sécurité publique : Ousmane Sonko, la police et la visite nocturne secrète à Colobane
By describing a discreet nighttime patrol through several neighborhoods of Dakar, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko highlighted the commitment of the defense and security forces. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening and modernizing the national police force to bolster internal security and support Senegal's development ambitions.
On Tuesday, during a visit to the National Police Headquarters, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko offered an unusual assessment of the security forces' work, revealing that he had conducted a discreet nighttime walk through several neighborhoods of Dakar a few weeks prior. This immersion allowed him to closely observe the security measures deployed to ensure the protection of citizens.
According to him, "this outing led him to the outskirts of the Colobane market, where he claims to have witnessed a police operation aimed at combating begging on public roads, insecurity and the anarchic occupation of public space."
The head of government said he had spoken briefly with the mobilized agents, praising the physical, material and human complexity of their missions, often carried out in trying conditions.
He particularly praised the ongoing initiatives, which, according to him, aim "not only to strengthen security, but also to clean up and improve the living conditions of populations throughout the national territory."
In a context marked by Senegal's internal stability, but also by the existence of external security threats, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's strategic priorities. He emphasized "the need for a substantial strengthening of the national police force's capabilities in order to preserve security gains, while also advocating for an increased role for the armed forces in border protection."
For Ousmane Sonko, "modernizing the national police force is a strategic imperative." He says it represents a key lever for effectively meeting the growing social demand for security, a condition he considers essential for sustainable, equitable, and sovereign economic and social development.
The head of government also believes that this capacity building will allow Senegal to consolidate its position among the countries that actively contribute to United Nations peacekeeping operations in crisis zones.
In this context, he urged the Director General of the National Police, under the authority of the Minister of the Interior, to continue the reforms undertaken in order to make the police institution a tool adapted to contemporary security challenges.
